An interactive metronome for a traditional flamenco seguiriya, played with cajon and palmas.

A basic seguiriya rhythm, played here with cajon and palmas. The compas of the seguiriya can be counted in a number of ways: Some flamencos start the count on the “one” of a twelve beat cycle, accenting the 1, 3, 5, 8, and 11. Others like to use the 3, 6, 8, 10, 12 beat emphasis and simply start counting on the “eight.”

Both of these methods are “correct” – remember that counting is simply a tool to internalize the rhythm, after which you’ll likely find yourself counting less and less (and then not at all). I’ve chosen the 8, 10, 12, 3, 6 notation here to emphasize the relationship between seguiriya and other flamenco palos, most notably solea.
